The explosion was immediate and impressive. The ceiling above the Fey crumbled down upon them as if a giant had taken his hammer to Manor High.

And as long as Rose continued to channel her power through her hands, more rubble cascaded down, burying the men in the ancient stones. Finally, when the ceiling began to turn to dust, Rose shut off the power as best she could.

But even as she gained her feet and turned to run, she could feel the magic bubbling away inside her, eager to be free now that it had been given new liberty. Assuming she survived, she would have to petition Ambrose for aid in putting the golden power he had given her back under her control.

Considering the frightfully large explosions caused whenever she relaxed that control—which had proved useful in the days when she and Ambrose were burying the hundreds of dead upon their return to Myrdrean—Rose didn"t trust herself to put the magic to further use.

“To your left!” This time Gareth"s cry was made with his mouth, not his mind. Just ahead a door stood ajar.

Rose drew her sword as she burst into the room, determined not to think about the ghastly odds of survival as she took in the two men who had her husband backed into a corner. Gareth swung at them, meeting each sweep of their swords with the battered rocking horse in his hands, but his time was nearly at an end. The men he fought surely realized that and were merely toying with him for their own entertainment, drawing out his death with sword and mace when they could have ended his life with magic a good time before.

These warriors were as highly trained as the ones who had pursued her and had been in the business of ending lives for centuries. A quarter-faerie princess and a wounded half vampire were no match for them in physical strength or magic.

So we must use cunning. Fly to me, Rose, with your hands upon the stone.

Rose obeyed without hesitation, knowing the other men had no doubt heard Gareth"s mental command as well. They had only a few seconds, maybe less, before the Fey warriors dispensed with formalities and dealt them both a killing blow.

Besides, Gareth was right. Flight was their only chance, and what better place to flee than into the lower Fey villages where so many thousands of halfbreed faeries lived? They could disappear amid the multitudes and perhaps never be found. At the very least, they would have a few hours to plan their next move in the deadly chess game their lives had become.

One of the warriors reached for her as she flew by, but Rose twisted in the air, eluding his grasp. She crashed into Gareth and seconds later felt his arms wrap tightly around her waist. As far as she understood, physical connection was all that was required for her to pull another of Fey blood into Faerie along with her. So she didn"t hesitate, gripping the stone tightly and tracing the runes of liberation with her other hand.
